Tropical Storm Bonnie Halts Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup

Posted on 23 July 2010 by admin

AccuWeather.com says Tropical Storm Bonnie causes temporary suspension of oil spill cleanup operations in the Gulf of Mexico

By Friday morning, Tropical Storm Bonnie was 155 miles southeast of Miami. The storm is expected to move quickly into the eastern Gulf, over the weekend.

Keen to point the finger elsewhere, a carefully worded BP press release said, “With the guidance and approval of the National Incident Commander (NIC) and the leadership and direction of federal government, relief well activities at the MC252 well site will be temporarily suspended because of potentially adverse weather associated with Tropical Storm Bonnie, which is projected to track into the Gulf of Mexico.”

Thad Allen, the National Incident Commander for the Gulf Oil Spill said he expected to see storm force winds at the well site, from Tropical Storm Bonnie early Saturday morning.

Accuweather said waves action in the area was 2 to 4 feet Friday morning, possibly rising to 5 to 8 feet on Saturday at the peak of the storm.

Accuweather said “The well itself will remain capped, even if it cannot be monitored.”

The real question is – will any oil leak out when Tropical Storm Bonnie stops anyone looking?
